My Yankees Report 6/10/22

Well it certainly was not pretty at all, but the Yanks came out on top in last night's game against the Chicago Cubs, 2-1. It took 13 innings for the Yanks to finally take the 1st game of a 3 game set against the Cubs.

The Yanks came back home and their pitching immediately turned back to dominant as Luis Severino pitched 6 innings of 1 run baseball with 10 strikeouts to go along with his dominant performance. The one run he gave up was a solo shot by Jason Heyward that surprised everyone that it actually got into the stands.

Gleyber Torres started the scoring for the Yanks with a solo shot in the bottom of the 4th, and then the Yanks didn't score until the 13th inning when they walked it off. The Cubs basically had a mini 9 inning game that was incorporated into this one where they shutout the Yanks. Both pitching staffs were in control the entire game as both teams had over 30 attempts with runners in scoring position combined and were only successful one time.

Cubs starter, Wade Miley, left the game early as he suffered an injury opening up the 4th inning, but the Cubs bullpen was great for them and was the reason why they stayed in the game that long. Their offense wasn't doing them any favors, so the bullpen had to back them up and hold them up strong for 10 innings.

The Yankee bullpen was once again dominant as Castro to King to Holmes to Schmidt to Peralta to Marinaccio only allowed 2 hits combined through 7 innings of work. Like the Cubs bullpen, the Yanks offense was not doing the team any favors, so the bullpen kept them in the game.

It was a pinch-hit game-winning RBI single for the Yanks as Jose Trevino came on to pinch-hit for Kyle Higashioka and lined a single into left field to finally win the game in 13 innings. Higashioka continues to struggle and it does not look any bit promising that he will start to pick it up. Trevino should be the Yanks everyday starting catcher, unless the Yanks make a trade for another catcher. One potential target for the Yanks was on the other side of the field last night in Wilson Contreras. Contreras is an all-star catcher and one of the best catchers in baseball, so it would probably take some assets to acquire the all-star.

The Yanks now have a nine-game home winning streak and that has been a result of the dominance they have gotten from not only their starting pitching, but their bullpen as well as both were shutting down each and every Cubs batter last night. The Yanks picked up their 42nd win last night and look to get their 43rd in the 2nd game of the 3 game set tonight against the Cubs in the Bronx.
